Subject: calcium oxalate stones
Hey Hey Hey,
I have a large sable male named Big Fun. He is a rescue so we are
quessing his age to be approx 4 years old. Big Fun has chronic
diareah and is on daily pred and pepto to control it.
Big Fun recently had surgery to remove two calcium oxalate stones
that were lodged in his urethea. Poor Guy ;-{ ouch!. The stones
were flushed back up into his bladder and then removed surgicaly.
The stones were then sent off for pathology and came back as being
calcium oxalate stones due to low ph / high acid in the urine. The
vet says this is caused by a high protein diet.
Everytime Big Fun's diet is changed his poops get much worse. He is
currently on Eukanuba kitten food and has been on that food for
several years.
Is there anything that I can add to his diet, without upsetting his
digestion, to balance his ph? Either food or herbal/natural
supplement? Alternativley, is there any medication to prevent the
formation of these stones?
Big Fun was in extreme pain with his urinary obstruction. There was
no real warning that these stones were forming until Big Fun
presented as an emergency. I would love to find a way to prevent any
more nasty little stones from forming.
Thanks Much,
HappyTails,
Karen and the Scruff You Gang
