I asked the vet to do a necropsy on her. She called tonight with
the
results. Lucy's liver was full of cancer, she said probably
lymphoma,
and as a result, her blood wasn't clotting so she has been slowly
bleeding to death. She started hemorraging on Saturday. She thinks
that
the build-up of blood was putting pressure on her lungs and throat
which
was causing her to have difficulty breathing.

Barb, I'm so sorry to hear about Lucy. I had one of my boys, Chuck
put down in Dec. to the same thing. He started having, black,
sticky, tarry diahrrea, wouldn't eat, and had a bloody nose bleed.
A friend's vet said it sounded like DIC (Dissemination Intravascular
Coagulation) and I was told how to recognize it. Sure enough, those
bruised/bloody spots under the skin showed up all over his body. I
rushed him to the vet and the vet suggested that he be put down, as
she said DIC usually kills within 24 hrs.

With a necropsy it was discovered he had tumors on his spleen,
liver, pancreas, and lymphosarcoma. But basically he was bleeding
to death internally, which would have killed him before the lympho
did.

I'm sure one of the wonderful vets on this list can give you more
info than I have, as I just skimmed over it.

Again my condolences for your loss.
