Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] UNBELEIVABLE BITING

I have some hopeful suggestions for you, as I recently went through the
same problem with a rescue. She launched and bit and broke through a
fingernail to bone, and held on. We made some rules. She would do the
same thing, about getting all revved. fortunately, when she was close
she would start to twitch her tail, so we had a warning. After the
problems, all play that got her wound up was stopped. no tug of war,
etc. we did a lot of just being out, and cuddling, but nothing that
intentionally got her going. Also, if we noticed her going in that
direction, we would put her in her cage (its 3 floors 2x5x6 feet)and
let her settle down. once settled, she could come out again. Over
about 1 month she really settled down, and now it is just about a year
later and is problemless. you will have to talk long and hard to your
aunt's children. let them know in no uncertain terms that this ferret
will bite, and let them know how bad it can be. it won't be a bad
thing if they are a little scared of that one. they'll be more likely
to stay away from it during the adjustment period. over time he will
mellow, and they will get used to him and not be afraid anymore
naturally, but if they encourage excitement you will lose your
training, they will be bitten, and then they will be afraid of them for
a long time. Also, mine needed time to get used to their new home (as
rescues) and to us, and that seemed to happen over a couple of months.
now they cuddle with us all the time. good luck
pam ohearn
