Subject: Proglycem without pediapred for insulinoma
Hello. I have a case, my precious old Minnie, of heart problem and
insulinoma. Minnie's weight gain on pediapred was putting way too much
strain on her heart, so we have weaned her off pediapred (almost; it's taking a
good long time as we are being very careful and watchful) and replaced it with
Proglycem. Good news is that she has taken off three ounces of excess weight
and is coughing less! She has not needed lasix for a week and a half, during
which time she has not been coughing. The Proglycem has its own issues but
we are watching carefully. We are prepared to evaluate her heart further with
ultrasound when/if it appears she needs more meds for her heart; she has
received an x-ray to rule out pneumonia. We need to get the insulinoma
treatment straightened out before that though..
Has anyone else used Proglycem alone, without the usual compliment of
pediapred, to treat a ferret with insulinoma? If so I would very much like to
hear your results; off list is fine. I realize this is not the optimum choice. But
surgery is out, as is more weight gain for Minnie. So far Minnie is doing pretty
well. At nearly eight years old with a 3 of 6 rated congenital heart murmur
(higher rating now) which was expected to show symtoms at four to five years,
we can't complain!
Thank you very much.
