Subject: Vaccine reaction, now what?
Hi all --
Friday I brought my three to the vet for distemper vaccine - Sam (2),
Frankie (1-1/2), and the little girl (11 weeks; not quite settled into a
name but probably either MissyBoo or Zoe). The vet used Galaxy-D. Sam
was vaccinated ca. 10:30 and started vomiting at 12:15; he kept going
for almost half an hour. I finally got some benedryl (and water) down
him, and he slept the rest of the day (with a very worried Mom checking
in on him to make sure he was still breathing!) Seemed a little out of
it in the evening, but he took food. He was his normal self in the
morning.
So my question is this. His reaction, while worrisome, was mild. Should
I avoid vaccinating him again? Should I try a different vaccine? (My vet
hasn't used the Merial vaccine yet, and with a reaction to Galaxy, I
hate to go to Fervac.) If I don't vaccinate him, and therefore don't
take him out in public, might there be a problem if my other two are
taken out? Could they bring distemper home? For that matter, does Sam
have an effective blood titre for the next year despite the reaction, or
might his AB production have been compromised?
Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated. Also, how do I report this
to the galaxy-D folks (since I believe they should be notified of any reactions)?
Thanks --
