Fred should probably be on Prednisone. Stay away from sweets such as
Karo syrup. This should only be used to bring him around from a
hypoglycemic episode and should then be followed by a high protein
meal.
Bert's problem sounds more immediately serious. Straining to go (I
assume urination) can become life-threatening pretty quickly.
Proscar or Propecia can be used to reduce the swelling of the
prostate. This may be the problem if he has adrenal disease. Lupron
can be used long term to keep the symptoms of adrenal disease at bay.
