Subject: Update on Spike; diabetes and diarrhea
Just a quick update on Spike, my little 7 year old
girl that was battling diarrhea, and ended up with a
blood glucose of over 400.
Thank you to those of you that wrote and offered
suggestions. I immediately backed her off of the 0.75
ml BID of Pediapred over just a few days. Her bg came
down and while it is still a bit over 100, it isn't a
problem. Her diabetes was definitely medication
related.
For the diarrhea, the suggestion of adding canned
pumpkin (not the pie mix, but pure pumpkin) at a rate
of 50/50 baby food/pumpkin firmed her stool up
immediately. I had already switched her to Gerber
Turkey and purchased some Hills Prescription Z/D.
I've not added much ground Z/D at this point, but I
suspect she has eaten a piece or two on her own, as I
have it available in her cage.
I've changed the ratio to about 75/25 Turkey/pumpkin
now, and still having good results. I've also started
to treating her for Helicobacter 'again' with the
Biaxin and Amoxy. These meds helped her last spring,
so we have opted to give it another try.
Spike has had more energy the past few days, and has
also lost a great deal of her bloated appearance. She
still is having the occasional slimy green stool, but
she seems much better.
Thank you to everyone that sent info and
recommendations for little Spike; you were so
encouraging!
Julie
