FWIW, when I had my pet rats put down, the vet used what she described as a
"gas chamber." No injection was necessary.

My poor fatty had pneumonia and was barely conscious when she was finally
put down. I couldn't bear to watch it either so I wasn't with her at the
end. I don't know that this method would work for a ferret, I don't know
how big the apparatus is. And it's not a good choice for anyone who wants
to be with their pet at the end, since they are enclosed.

Here's hoping I don't have to think about THIS for a while, I have 2
ferrets of about 2 yo each.
