I have a ferret who is apparently deaf and at least mostly blind. I noticed
that if I didn't let him know I was there before picking him up, he was
startled (and tried to bite). Now, I wave my hand back and forth in front
of him before I pick him up and he seems okay with that. He's either seeing
the light/dark (he has obvious cataracts) or smelling me. Neither
disability seems to bother him in the least.
