Subject: Re: Safe for litter???

"I remember reading that pine and cedar was a problem for
ferrets. Is alfalfa the same or would it cause blockages?"

No. Alfalfa is not the same at all as pine or cedar. Pine
and cedar are wood whereas alfalfa is hay (like grass only
better). Seeing as how ferrets are carnivorous (eat meat)
like cats and dogs, and not plant eaters (forget the term)
like horses and rabbits, you would not want to give the
ferrets alfalfa. Granted, it is one of the top hays for
horses, but you should stick to meat products for the ferrets.
As for using alfalfa pellets for litter, I wouldn't. That's
very expensive litter and meant as food for horses. I would
try carefresh or something similar like that. Not real
expensive (I use it underneath the cage and can't do anything
expensive at all). For the litter box I've been using a cat
litter (not the scoopable kind though) called Pa-Purr. It's
made entirely out of paper, is flushable, biodegradable, and
virtually dust free. You can find it at PetsMart (maybe other
places too but I'm not sure where else) and it's very
reasonably priced. I also use the scoopable version of it for
my cat box. Hope this helps!
