Another thought (and these may not make any sense) is to call
the veterinary poison hot line number which you can find in the
Files section at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Ferret-Health-list
in case there might be any lawn or gardening products used
around you during this time of year which are strong irritants that
are able to rpoduce those symptoms after a delay of a few days
to a week.

Sarcotpic mange ran through my mind, but I think the description
differs, though I have no experience with it and therefore don't
know.

(Again, I don't know if ferrets get poison ivy or poison oak
problems but the symptoms and on-set timing (12 hours to 7
days) fit what those do in humans, and looking in the area just in
case one of them is there is simple enough, so...)
