Subject: Linatone interfering with medications??
Hello,
A quick question. I vaguely remember once several years ago
on the FML something was mentioned about Linatone and
medications, that Linatone could interfere with absorption of
certain medications. I have never had a problem, until
possibly now. Taz (my miracle ferret) has been on Baytril for
the last week and a half for severe pneumonia that he
developed after his insulinoma surgery. However, he detests
the Baytril, and I do mean detests. We have tried every
flavor available here, nothing can cover up the taste for him.
So, even though it doesn't cover up the taste, I have been
mixing his .13ml dose of Baytril (13mg in a 100mg/ml solution)
with about .8ml of Linatone for the last 3 days. However, I
noticed that it doesn't mix - the Baytril must be water based,
but I invert the syringe enough times until the Baytril is in
numerous little bubbles dispersed throughout the Linatone.
The medication is also followed with about 1/8th of a cup of
chicken baby food mixed with A/D, and then more linatone. I
do that because it is the only way I can keep Taz from clawing
at his mouth and drawing blood on the roof of his mouth - he
hates the Baytril that much.
However, while Taz has been doing much better since Monday (he
started on the Baytril last Friday), this morning I noticed a
mildly runny nose, and he just now had a sneezing fit, which
were his initial symptoms each time he developed pneumonia. I
also need to add that this pneumonia is completely resistant
to Clavamox and Cefadroxil, and although Trimethoprim-sulfa
for 4 weeks did get rid of it at one point, it came back 2
weeks after the Trimeth-sulfa was discontinued, so it is
possible that the bacteria causing the pneumonia is just
becoming resistant to the Baytril (which would not be good at
all). I will not be using the Linatone as a dilutent any
more, just in case, but I would like to know for future
reference, and so I know if I need to put Taz through the
trauma of a tracheal wash to determine which antibiotic to try
next, if it has become resistant. Taz is also on Carafate -
which I put him back on because he had started to grind his
teeth more - most likely because of the stress from the
Baytril.
Please e-mail me asap if you know one way or the other if the
Linatone could interfere with the absorption of the Baytril,
and please carbon copy the list. My e-mail is
