Subject: skin problem
I was visiting a shelter yesterday and they had a ferret
with an unusual skin problem. He has no background
info, but has no fur on most of his tail and the tops
of his back feet- the skin in the area gets red at times
and other times doesn't look red, he also has an area
of skin redness and irritation on his underside closer
to the tail.
The tail looked a little swollen to me, the skin doesn't
appear normal on the top of the feet where the fur
is gone ( meaning not smooth like with adrenal).
There is no problem between the toes, but
two or so nails on each foot the nail bed area looked
a little thickened, dry.
The ferret isn't ill, playful, not in pain or itchy, and
there is no other fur loss. The vet was thinking some
kind of chemical burn, but he has been in the shelter
a few months and still gets the redness off and on,
which makes me think it isn't a chemical or burn type
problem.
I tried to get some pics. I have more, but these were
the best ones, and didn't want to overflow the list here.
The one pic of the feet shows the pattern of fur
loss but the flash washed out the color which was almost
as red as the tail.
Any suggestions?
Patty
ps. I also got a pic of a bald ferret if Dr. WIlliams hasn' t been
inundated with those and would like another.
