Dexamethasone is another steroid which has effects similar to
prednisone. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that's what you have
under a slightly different name. Prednisone is generally preferred due
to a lower risk of side effects. My Pertwee is on dexamethasone as part
of his treatment after bilateral adrenal surgery because he simply
doesn't respond to prednisone. That is very unusual, though. The good
news is that Pertwee has been on this course of treatment for nearly two
years with no problems.

In your position I might discuss it with your vet, and ask why he
prefers dexamethasone over prednisone. He may have a good reason, and I
am no vet.

FWIW, I have one ferret with insulinoma, and she is on prednisone and is
doing well.
