Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] Re: distemper vaccine
Hi Angela,
Sorry we do not use Nobivac-D here in the US,
so I do not have any personal experience with this vaccine.
However according to Dr Fox's book, Nobivac-d (intervet) is
a ferret distemper vaccine approved for use in Scandinavia after
extensive safety and immunogenicity studies. Thus it should be
safe to use.
The second part of your question is about giving a "half dose" of
the vaccine. I do not recommend this! A few years ago a breeder
in my area gave a kit a "hal dose" of Fervac-d vaccine. Then the kit
went to Florida where eventually died from distemper. I talked to
United Vaccine, and they said a "half dose" would not induce a
protective response in the ferret. I also talked to Schering
(Galaxy-D).
They also said a "half dose" would not work. A full dose is the best
way to go.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
Likewise I give a "full dose" to a 3 pound puppy or to a 100pound
Rottie,
and I give a "full dose" to a tabby cat (~10 pounds) or to a tiger
(~450 lbs).
