Subject: Help Severe Eye Infection!

I am relating this for Diane Bodofsky at Last Chance
Ferret Rescue. Any help would be appreciated!

A five year old ferret that was adopted out of the shelter
three years ago has returned temporarily to try and get
help with an eye infection. Other than possible adrenal
disease the ferret has no other health problems. He lives
in a household with a greyhound and a cat. Right before
the infection occured his human had a salmonella
infection.

The infection started approximately 4 months ago in the
3rd eyelid of the left eye. At that point he was put on
broad spectrum antibiotics and eyedrops. These
included:Chloramphenicol, Augmentin, Atropine drops,
Gentamycine drops, Tetracyclyine, Terramycine ointment,
Biaxin. Despite these, the infection worsened and spread
to the other eye. At 2 1/2 months a biopsy was done on a
piece of the left third eye which came back as
"unspecified bacterial infection."
The infection worsened, and at 3 months both 3rd eyelids
were removed and biopsed and cultured. The pathology
report came back that the infection was E. coli, and a
culture and sensitivity indicated that Baytril should
irradicate it. It did not,in fact it worsened with
increased swelling and the growth red tissue. Current
trials of Tazicef and Cipro drops also do not seem to be
effective so far.

Has anyone had this kind of problem before?

At this point his eyes are so swollen that it is
impossible to tell if he has any vision left. Even more
than losing his eyes we're concerned about him losing his
life if we can't get this infection under control. And is
it possible despite two biopsies, that it's Lympho and not
an infection?

thanks very much!
