I had a similar situation a year ago with a 7.5 year old male. He
had a chronic cough that would not respond to antibiotics. The vet
could faintly hear fluid in his chest and believed he was suffering
from cardiomyopathy. When I finally got them to do an ultrasound,
they found his heart in great shape, but he had a large mass growing
in his chest cavity (diagnosed as mediastidal lymphoma). But for the
fact that he got "winded" easily, he was pretty healthy. He had a
great appetite and never lost any weight or exhibited any other
typical "symptoms" of cancer. Though the poor guy spent 6 days in
the hospital, subject to all kinds of nasty medicines, he didn't
survive.

Just a thought - I truly hope your's is something more benign.
