Actually, if you read the past vet posts on this topic you will find that ferrets are very steroid resistant with very few suffering problems from it. Use the search engine at

Surgery is, of course, usually the way to go.
While you are reading, look into the study comparing survival times for different treatments that vet, Charles Weiss, has up at either his ferretdoctor or Bradley Hill website. I can't recall the addies off-hand so look in
