Subject: heartworm prevention

"This is the first time I have heard about heartworm medication for
ferrets. Is it really necessary? Why would it be necessary?"

Two years ago I read a very scary article in Ferrets magazine by Dr.
Deborah Kemmerer, who I believe is the most versed in heartworm disease
in ferrets. Ferrets can get heartworm from a mosquito bite. Mosquitoes
can also make their way indoors. The survivial rate for infected
ferrets is very low, so why take the risk? Mike Janke's site has this
information on it. Since reading that article, I have had my ferrets on
preventative. I'm taking Nexus to my vet tomorrow to get started on
it. We live in the northeast and I have already spotted mosquitoes
outside. If you live in an area that has mosquitoes, I'd rather be safe
than sorry.
