Subject: Why do ferrets twitch after being put to sleep?

I've had quite a few ferrets put to sleep now, some just drifted away
quietly, others twitched more or less. When I had Jack put to sleep just
over 2 weeks ago, he really twitched badly. It seems as soon as he was
dead, he became alive again. His whiskers twitched, his nose, ears, his
legs went, he moved so much that my vet kept listening to his heart to see
if it was still beating. She waited 10-15 minutes before starting the
autopsy to make sure he was really dead. I find it very traumatising to see
this twitching, thinking he's still alive when I know he's dead. It would
explain why I've had so many dreams about Jack, I dream that he is put to
sleep and has the autopsy and afterwards he is alive again and back with me.

Could he have been very tense because of pain when he was alive and when he
was dead, the muscles relaxed and caused the twitching? I'd just like to
know why it happens...
