Subject: cardiomyopathy

I took Ares (age: guesstimate 7-8 years old) to the vet this mng. He had a
cough that worsened. Radiographs showed fluid around the lungs. Vet went to
drain the fluids and everywhere she stuck the needle she got blood. Did an
ultrasound - huge enlarged heart. It's probably cardiomyopathy. We
discussed treatment a little; I go back to pick him up tonight. I've
searched the archives and learned a great deal about this condition. I know
there's no cure, just treatment.

My question: if it is cardiomyopathy, how long can a ferret live with this
condition? And how exactly do they die from it? Drown from fluid in the
lungs? Suffocate? Or do they basically have a heart attack?

I'm just trying to figure out what to expect. Like will he possibly die in
his sleep one night? And I don't want him to suffer by having trouble
breathing and suffocate.

Thank you!

Susan D.
