Subject: Metronidazole ?

I don't know about resistance to flagyl. I know none of our ferrets could ever
stand the taste and some gagged very badly and could not tolerate it. We have
used fenbendazol (Panacur or Safe Guard brand names) succesfully as an
alternative to flagyl for treating giardia. It's inexpensive and appeared quite
mild tasting; our ferrets either liked it or didn't mind it (similar to response to
amixicillin), and it did the trick on the giardia- we used it on three ferrets. We
have used Biaxin as part of a protocol for ulcers, instead of flagyl. Biaxin is
costly, but we prefer it to using flagyl. I will always try either of these two
alternatives first, as our ferrets have had such bad reactions to the taste of
flagyl.
