no, he is doing it when trying to eat, when laying down,
when playing etc. This is almost like a harsh sound.

Is it a cough? A throat clearing?


Some ferrets eat too fast and do a sound like that while
eating in that situation.


If it's like that but it's not pronounced he may be having
irritation or tickling from ingested fur, a problem that
increases during shedding seasons. Are you giving a furball
remedy like Laxatone, Laxastat, Petromalt, or petroleum jelly?
If not, give a bit of that each day while he's shedding and
brush or comb him daily to remove excess fur while he sheds.
Is he grooming his fur a lot?


If he's found a new secret place that collect dust that will
do it, too.


If it's pronounced and you think that it may be a cough then
get him to the vet.


Yes, he could have a sore throat from any of these things or
from an infection.
