Subject: Re: things to have on hand for sick ferrets
In addition to Science Diet A/D and baby food in a variety of meat
flavors, I have the following items to add.
Electrolytes. I prefer Kao-Electrolyte, which is sold in a box of
packeted powder. Each packet makes 8 oz. It comes in unflavored. I
don't have to worry about freezing Pedialyte or about it going bad.
It does contain Dextrose, though...so those with Insulinoma ferrets
should use caution. Although, I make it a point to never buy Marshall
Farms products, I do have a bottle of Ferret-Aide, which is also
powdered electrolytes, and does not contain dextrose.
Nutrical or Ferretvite
Karo syrup
Feeding syringes 20 cc.
Medicating syringes 1 cc.
Pet Tinic
Ferretone or Linatone
I also keep Baby rice cereal and canned pumpkin on hand to help
combat serious diarrhea.
Experienced ferret owners, trained by their vet, also like to keep
lactated ringers, venosets, and 20 gauge(green) needles on hand to
hydrate dehydrated ferrets, quickly. I also have a bottle of
Dexamethasone and syringes on hand. Used in instances of shock or
severe diarrhea upon the recommendation of my vet.
