Subject: Ferret fell from 4th floor!!!... More Info

News from Buffy, who yesterday fell from the 4th floor....

I just heard from my friend. She took her ferret to the vet again, because she was concerned. The vet took a X-ray and surprise... She had a fracture in one leg, in the base of the femur. She is going through surgery tomorrow. (I think the X-ray should be the first thing to do in a case like this but, seems like the vet didn't think so..)

Yesterday Buffy eat and drink normally. The stools and urine are normal. But she sleeps all day... The vet told my friend not to move Buffy and gave her some drops to put in the water: BIRD antibiotics named ENROFLOXACIN. I find unusual that he gave a bird antibiotic to a ferret (I can be wrong on this)... My friend says that the vet isn't ferret knowledgeable... But there are no other options where she lives.

I don't know if is normal for her to sleep all day... Well, maybe a fall like that is a good excuse to sleep...

My friend is also worried about the surgery and the anesthesia.. I'ver heard Isoflurane is appropriate for ferrets... Is there anothe one?

[moderator's note: the following paragraph was in another message that was sent by the author; pasted here to save some space]

She is having surgery tomorrow night but we are not sure if it is better to give her anesthesia by inyection or inhaled, also the Vet told us that it is a delicate part of the bone because she broke the tip of the long bone that joins in what would be her knee. The doctor wants to insert a screw or small metal rod throug the little tip of her broken bone in order to join it to the rest of it. Do you think this is the correct procedure? Does any of you has had any similar experience? Do you know of any Ferret that has recovered succesfully form a fracture.

Please, any help would be very useful. My friend is very worried and in tears all day, because she brought Buffy home just a week ago. And she is only 4 months old!!!

Thanks.
