Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] Update on bleeding ulcer

Kelly,
What she moist likely has is a stomach full of hair from preening-
our shelter has removed a number of these- they cause partial
obstructions- and this is most likely why her stools have been
abnormal for qa length of time. AS hair sits in the gut the masses
get bigger & bigger as more hair enters from grooming. -- that is a
symptom of partial obstruction. Eventually it causes a total
obstruction. Loss of weight due to malnutrition is common in these
cases as they cannot ingest enough food to maintain their weight.

It is your choice to make but you may well be depriving your ferret
of health by not removing the contents of her gut.

I took Phoebe to the vet today. Her heart and lungs are fine.
X-rays revealed, I am not sure what? The vet said he did not see
the normal wrinkles a stomach has and he thinks something is in
there? I will not do another surgery on her, she has been through
too much. He also said it may be an ulcer? He did not think it
was a foreign body. She has never been a chewer. The coughing
could be from reflux? Thanks Dr. Williams, your great! I am
doing amoxi, carafate, pepcid ac, pet tinic. I will hope for the
best. The vet said if it is a tumor that has ulcerated the
bleeding won't stop? Has anyone else ever used pepcid ac
chewable? I don't think she could survive surgery, but I hate to
see her ill. It all happened so quickly. She had ECE years ago
and her intestines have never been the same> She had an adrenal
cancer years ago and I am sure some was left behind, Could it
have spread to her stomach?
Thank you for your quick response! It is so very appreciated!
