Subject: SPay on older ferret
HI all-
an update on surgeries for older ferrets-- Midnight arrived one of
six on an emergency intake last Thursday. Midnight is seven years
old - and intact! She was being bred- or they were still hoping for
a litter- the report was that 2 years ago she bore a litter and then
cannibalized it- at 5 years of age- I perhaps do not blame her. The
owner reported he did not have funds to spend on spay and repeated
cycling her when she came into season with a male ( also intact).
Her blood samples were drawn last Friday for ADV testing - along
with others in her group and shipped to United- results we expect on
Weds afternoon.
The surgery for spay was scheduled for today (Tues) upon exam last
Friday- due to a mass palpated in the lower quadrant.
If ever there is a reason to spay an intact female at a reasonable
age -- this is the reason. The tiny and petite less than one pound
female yeilded an ovary twice the size of a normal healthy kit. The
mass weight was greater than that of 2 healthy kits. I have sent the
picture along so you can see what it appeared like.
Bruce Williams will be receiving this ovary and reviewing it for us.
Presently Midnight is resting- though very lethargic. She is taking
nutrical & drinking we will wait to see whether the mass may spread,
or whether it may have been excised completely.
I will advise you all of her progress- we hope for a happy
retirement for her.
