Subject: Re:Hypothyroidism?

We had 2 ferrets that had hypothyroidism and both had
different symptoms, however one had horrible lesions
and his ears would blow up, the bridge of his nose and
his feet would swell and generally speaking it
appeared as if he had terrible allergies!
Bedding/environment/diet, cleaning products were all
changed and many months down the road he was finally
tested after much urging and he definitely had
hypothyroidism! We both were so happy to have a
diagnosis and to be able to treat him, having tried
everything and nothing had worked!
As soon as he started on medication for it, his skin
cleared he became a normal ferret again! We maintained
him on the medication for about 3-4 years, checking
his T4 level every month and then every 2 months! As
in people what appears to be allergies can also be a
malfunctioning of the thyroid!
The other loveable character was our 'club mascot' and
was loved by everyone, you couldn't have asked for a
more congenial fellow!!! His problem was being
'overweight' and a constant in the food dish, hardly
taking a breathe for air! He too was on medication for
at least 4 years and had it checked periodically for
adjustments. Whenever there was an increase in weight
it was due to a low dose of medication and once
adjusted he slimmed down---Angela.
