Subject: Chondroma?

I have a 4ish year old ferret, male, early alter - stray so no history.
Chippewa had a hard lump on his tail, but the last couple of days it exploded
in size and its still hard.

Vet appointment today showed xrays that have it local to the vertebrae of the
tail - so excising should be curative. There are no other instances (based
on xray) that there are any tumors located elsewhere in the body - organs
appear normal. Blood tests don't show anything remarkable. Doc thinks its a
chondroma ...I hope so. The growth is located in the second sacral
vertebrae. But in order to remove the growth, the whole tail has got to come
off. The growth appears to be one inch in size and bilateral/symmetrical.

So poor Chippewa will soon be tailless...So to the vets I ask: I am not
familiar with these types of growths - what could the long-term prognosis be?
Will the loss of his tail at this age affect him in any way? Thanks in
advance..
