Subject: Bleeding mouth question - important

Hello all,

First, thanks so much to all of you who sent advice and well wishes
about my Calvin. I am heartbroken to have to say that he passed away
early this morning. He had been getting so much better Saturday and
Sunday, but took a turn for the worse Sunday night. He developed an
ulcer or wound or something on the roof of his mouth that would not stop
bleeding. I couldn't take him to my regular vet (she was off), so I took
him to another vet that has been good with ferrets. He spent the day at
the vet's on Monday, who discharged him and told me to give him
supportive care, but he passed away early this morning. My heart is
broken.

I do have a very important question, however. Does anyone know - is it
possible to stop bleeding from a wound on the roof of the mouth? I was
told that it is not possible to stop bleeding in this location, that it
can't be cauterized or anything. It seems to make sense, but I just
felt so badly that he bled so much and swallowed so much blood, and I
couldn't do anything to make it stop. Was there any way that it could
have been stopped? The ulcer, or whatever it was, was relatively small
but just did not stop bleeding.

It really matters to me whether or not the bleeding could have been
stopped - anyone who might know, please reply to me on or off list.
Thank you all, again, for your kind thoughts about Calvin. I can't begin
to tell you all how much he will be missed.

Kym

[I know a human with a mild bleeding disorder and the dentists used to spray Epinephrin on his wounds if he began bleeding, but those were slight. The size your sweetheart dealt with sounds much larger, and the bleeding more profuse for your little one.]
