Subject: Need input on compounded Florinef--quickly if possible
I have a technical question re: compounding Florinef. Some
background first. My three and half year old ~3.5 lb. gib, Sparky,
had the left adrenal out 12-23-01 (it was the largest my vet had
ever seen) and the right by cryo yesterday. He had complications of
a hugely enlarged prostate, with the vet drawing out at least 24 cc
of urine. I was in the room watching the procedure and the prostate
was indeed huge.
Anyway, we had the script compounded by a new pharmacy. The bottle
reads as follows: Give one teaspoon (0.03MG) twice a day. Compound
0.1MG Qty 7
Tab (nothing written) Florinef Acetate 0.1MG. The vet had said
when he gave me the script that I would only be giving .03cc.
You can see why I question that. That is almost 3cc of medication
to give a fert. I questioned my vet who is unfamiliar with the ins
and outs of compounding. The pharmacist he normally deals with is
out til Monday and the pharmacist that compounded it is out until
tomorrow. Is this correct? And, just so I know for future
reference, if I miss a dose, how long before a possible Addison's
Crisis would come on? Also, how long should it take before the
prostate shrinks to a normal size? He is eating and drinking but
the urine output does not seem to have changed. He has not
attempted to go since I have been home. Any input would be greatly
appreciated. Thank you so much.
Earlicks and toebitings to all,
Trish
