I had the EXACT same thing happen after I ensured Baxter, then 5 1/2,
through ----------. At the time I took out a policy on Baxter, he
had just seen Dr. Weiss two months prior who gave him a clean bill of
health. It took from July '01 to February '02 before I got the final
letter explaining why they would not cover the adrenal surgery because
they kept losing everything I and Dr. Weiss' office would fax/mail to
them for my claim.
Not only didn't they honor my claim, they dropped Baxter altogether as
the "pre-existing" condition would have disqualified him for a policy.
When they refunded my money, the pro-rated it to the date of the
February letter that they sent, even though I first filed the claim in
July!
Pet insurance is a great idea, in theory, and I wish you luck with your
insurance endeavors. I found that the time I spent trying to stay on
top of the insurance company was probably worth more than the money I
originally spent on the policy. Unfortunately, Baxter now has a lung
condition that requires surgery that I simply can't afford. The
insurance policy would have still been in effect and could have helped
extend his life.
