Just last week, I was "interviewing" vets in my area as I'm looking
to make a change. The one I have chosen is the only other vet in
town that has a lot of ferret experience (to my knowledge). During
our phone conversation, the subject of Aleutian's came up. I asked
if he routinely tested and he said that he does not. He attends a
lot of exotic pet conferences and the general consensus is that it is
blown out of proportion and is not a big threat. He further said
that there are many differing opinions and they are, for the most
part, unsubstantiated.

Sounds like he attends the same conferences the Maryland vets attend.
