Subject: Weird belly sore? incision line? thingy? Thoughts?
Hi everyone,
I have a quandary. Xena is an approximately 3 year old female
ferret. Has always maintained good weight and still does. Activity
is normal. Appetite normal. Everything about her is normal.
But here's the catch she has always had a small "hole" in the skin of
her abdomen. Almost like an incision line that has healed leaving a
little pocket. Hope that makes sense. It collects lint like a belly
button. In fact it is located where one would expect a belly button
to be. (No she's not a he - I'm sure.)
In the last 4 months it has had crusty dried blood on it almost
always. I never actually see fresh blood just scabby dried blood.
It was really red at one point like it was infected so my vet
prescribed baytril which seemed to clear it up. But it has never
stopped completely. Always a little bit of dried blood.
What is this thing? I have uploaded a photo to the photos section of
the ferret health list. It's called "Xenas weird belly thingy".
Sorry its not very good but I can't seem to get her to lie in exactly
the right position and it's so small that the camera doesn't pick it
up very well.
My quandary is this. My vet and I don't know what it is. I hesitate
to open her up seeing as she is exhibiting no other problems except
the little bit of dried blood. But I am worried that it might be
something. I don't think that she is licking it like a hot spot as
she seems completely unaware of it's existence. And I don't think
that she is 'catching it' on anything as she would have to do it on a
daily basis. I keep the area clean and it is always back the next
day.
Any thoughts? Similar experience?
TIA,
Meighan
