I had a similar problem with a 7 year old. He was in superb health,
glossy coat etc but a bit scrawny-looking. After I had had him a few
days, noticed he had difficulty eating. Took him to the vet who
removed about lots of molars and a chunk of infected gum tissue later
that afternoon. I took him home the next morning and despite my fears
for his little mouth, was crunching merrily on hard biscuits just
hours later. He has never looked back. Sounds as if your boy might
well have dental problems - maybe from earlier malnutrition?
My lad's was through age more than anything else.
Best wishes
