A hairball or other space occupying mass in the stomach should be
considered as well in this case.

I would start with a vet visit, and radiography or the abdomen, as
well as a barium study. However, this may only identify 30% of
cases, but the barium will pick up 100% of megaesophagus cases.

If this is negative, and the index of suspicion is high, then an
exploratory is probably in order.
