Subject: Update on the 24 hour Fasting Ferret
I'm just writing to let everyone know the outcome of our baby girl's
24 hour fast.
This evening we took Kahlua to the vet so she could be X-RAY a second
time. Because of the 24 hour fast we found out that unlike most
ferrets who can monitor their intake of foods, our Kahlua cannot
monitor her food intake which leads to a bloated ferret. Also because
of her belly being so swollen (three times the normal size according
to the first X-RAY )with food her little body couldn't digest or
process the extra food properly. But after the 24 hour fast her
stomach had gone down to normal size. Luckly since we have caught this
in time no internal damage has been done. Even though the X-RAY showed
her intestinal walls begining to thicken because of the extra food
that wasn't being digested properly. But like I mentioned before there
has been no damaged done. We are now instructed to only feed her twice
a day morning and night, and to only let her eat what she can for ten
to fifteen minutes.
My girlfriend and I have read the responses from the original post and
would like to say thank you for your input. But I would like to add
that she did not have surgery nor was that even being thought about.
Also we did consult our vet and I know my girlfriend quizzed him
throughly since she is extrmely *as I am to* over protective of our
little babies. Now we can go back to just worrying about how long it
will take them to get over the nasty respirtory infection that both of
them have.
Thank you again
Steve, Suzanne, Kahlua and Jack
