Subject: Re: Possible Deaf Ferret

My P.J. is deaf, its not really uncommon in white or blaze ferrets
(so I've been told)
Anyway, when I rescued him at about a year, he was a horrific biter.
Once we got him settled, cleaned up and fed (he was filthy skin and
bones) and I realized he was deaf, we began to scruff him and hold
him up to our faces to say "no" (so he could see that we were
displeased) Within a month he was only biting when startled and now
(two years later) he only nibbles on an occassional toe - but who
can blame him. Nobody can tell he's deaf, it doesn't seem to bother
him - and the only real problem is that he is also an escape artist
and if he gets out when I'm out and then I come home, he's usually
asleep somewhere and I can't find him or wake him by calling.
Doesn't bother him, but I've had a few small heart attacks worrying
that he somehow got outside or got hurt.
