I'm beginning to wonder why this drug always seems to be the first
thing that's given to a ferret with diarrhea even though nothing can
be found that would indicate its usage is appropriate.

Besides the fact that ferrets absolutely hate it and it really
stresses them out, I've read that Metronidazole is a carcinogen in
lab rats/mice and it should only be used if absolutely necessary.
Now I don't know all the details on that, and it may require huge
dosages over time. Heck, it seems like just about everything causes
cancer if given at a high enough dose for a long enough period of
time if you listen to all the preachers of doom and gloom.
