Subject: Erratic bloodsugar in insulinoma ferret
Dear List,
This is Susan Prock in Massachusetts. Gabriella is an almost 6 year old
spayed female. Following her collapse, she was diagnosed with insulinoma in
December. In January, she had another spell, so I had exploratory surgery
done. A couple of very small tumors were found, but only one of the 4
biopsies came back positive for insulinoma. She has been on .4 ML Pediapred
twice a day since then. She has been lively and alert since recovering from
the surgery and subsequent pancreatitis.
I started feeding her the Insulinoma Elixir posted by Mary Van Dahm
Pam Wood-Krzeminski, DVM and Angela Espinet) in March. Her last fasting
blood sugar measurement (end of March) was 53, which they said was low.
She had a spell on Friday, but instead of low blood sugar, it was
high blood sugar. She collapsed and seemed passed out with her eyes
open. It seemed like the other low blood sugar episodes, so I gave
her .2 ML more Pediapred, stuffed her with Nutrical and hauled her
off to the vet. Her 3 hour fasting blood sugar was 220. A few
hours later, a non-fasting blood sugar was 216.
If she's flip flopping like that (53 to 220), I'm afraid that the
insulinoma tumors must be so big and invasive that her pancreas is
just going crazy and she's a goner. Or maybe, I hope, the
Ferretzyme, etc. is working and she just doesn't need as much
Prednisone any more.
I'd appreciate any feedback or advice on handling erratic blood sugar
readings in an insulinoma ferret.
Thank you,
Susan, Gabriella, Jack and Obiwan
