Subject: ADV Questions...

Dr. Williams,

I read recently an excerpt from a quote you made concerning the Avecon
Saliva Test and your feelings on the accuracy of the test results. I have
been in the process of planning an annual event for our organization which
this year will be a Ferret Beach Party. After much discussion amongst board
members and organization members, it was determined that in addition to the
required proof of vaccination for rabies and distemper, we would require
that each ferret be tested for ADV prior to entering the event area. We
have been in touch with Avecon and have received their "disclaimer" on the
accuracy of the testing.

Based on what I read in your post, here are my concerns -

1) Are we throwing away $1000 needed for the purchase of the Avecon Salvia
Test Kits?
2) Because it is an outdoor event, I was asked why we are bothering with the
testing? If the transmission is via feces/urine/blood, wouldn't it be even
more important to have testing for an outdoor event? How could we possibly
sanitize the area where a ferret poops if it is in a grassy yard? IMHO, I
think there is more risk here and would strongly urge people not to let
their ferrets wander around in the grass, but rather carry them when they
are not in their pet carrier. Does being outdoors reduce the risk of
transmission?
3) If the CIEP test were given prior to the event, would there be a
certificate showing that the ferret had tested negative and how long are
those test results valid?

It is becoming more clear to me as time goes on that clubs holding events
for and with ferrets will become a thing of the past. I find this very sad,
as my guys always seem to enjoy the new stimulation and the "adventure" of
attending events. Perhaps it is just me loving to show off my percious
darlings as they compete in the contests and games.

I look forward to your input.
