Subject: Insulinoma Surgery

With a BG test result of 47, our Lucky (a 4 1/2 year old albino male)
was diagnosed with Insulinoma about a month ago. He has never had a
seizure. We caught it because he started losing balance in his rear
legs. We have him on a twice daily dose of Prednisone @ 1.25mg each.
We took him in for the surgery yesterday, and with a BG of only 28,
the vet postponed the surgery as he was certain Lucky would not
survive it at that level.

Here's my thoughts. We made the mistake during the last month of
using raisins to administer the Pred., and the vet had us fast Lucky
for over 10 hours prior to surgery. I want to believe the combination
of the two was the reason for the low BG. If not, and his level IS
actually that low, how do we get the level up high enough to get him
through the surgery? Is that level actually a concern for surgery?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. We realize time is important
and we either have to get info to our vet, or find another one. This
vet has done a wonderful job for us for over 5 years, and I would
hate to leave him because he is not afraid to clear up his
uncertainties. Ferret vets are very hard to come by in the state of
Iowa.

Thanks in advance.
