Subject: "Mystery lump" surgery tomorrow a.m. for Weezle

Time's short, so I'm posting these questions on the Ferret Realm, too.
My 8 year old male, Weezle, developed a sudden lump under his right
lower jaw a few days ago. Thinking it may be an abcessed tooth, I
put him on Amoxicillin over Memorial Day weekend, and took him to the
vet on Tuesday. Dr. tried to extract some fluid from the area, but
there is no pus present. Neither were there any tumor cells. I was
told that it could possibly be such a fibrous tumor, that it wouldn't
yield the tumor cells typically found. He gave us another Amoxicillin
prescription, with the instructions that if it didn't abate by
Thursday, to call for a surgery appt. Antibiotics were useless, and
the lump has gotten noticeably larger and tighter within 2 1/2 days.
Weezle is now scheduled for surgery at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, and I'm
wondering if anyone could offer any helpful input on this. Has
anyone had experience with, or heard of such incredibly fast-growing
tumors on ferrets? Also, Weezle has insulinoma, and the assistant
gave me instructions to withhold food from 8:00 p.m. tonight till
surgery tomorrow around 8:00. That's 12+ hours by the time he's out
of surgery! Doesn't that seem a bit extreme? Thanks for your
suggestions.
