Hi,

I'm with Sukie on this one. My own ferret Ker Avon (age four) will be
going for insulinoma surgery next Tuesday. Dr. Williams recently posted
that he prefers to opt for surgery early and save the prednisone for
when surgery is no longer an option. Until surgery can be scheduled
short term use of prednisone to prevent an insulinomic crash may well
make sense.

Also, you wrote that you were worried because Conan is so small. Small
ferrets are no less likely to come through surgeries well than big ones.
Avon is a very small male (about 2.2 lbs.) and he did well with his
adrenal surgery two and a half years ago. Our Romana, a very slight
female (under one pound), also had an adrenal surgery last year and came
through with flying colors. The real issue with whether or not surgery
is a good idea is if there are any other underlying health issues that
could cause problems.

Good luck to you and to Conan.

All the best,
Caity and the notorious nine
