Subject: gum question

Sherman has wide-spread inflamed gums right now which are apparently
causing him minor discomfort, but the only tartar is on the cheek
(buccal) surfaces of two molars and is not pronounced, plus his worst
inflammation is by his canines, not his molars.

I know that he might have a small virus causing this as happens in
humans, know that if it continues he might have unseen plaque or
tartar under his gums. ***Other possible causes?***

He and Scooter both are on z/d due to IBD, and in Sherman's case he
is also on Prednisone at a total of 5 mg per day. Have inflamed gums
been seen with IBD or other GI tract illnesses? With z/d diet? With
Prednisone?

My bet right now is that he has to pop through a virus that isn't
pronounced, but mouth health is important so I'd like to learn more
about inflammed .

There is no sign of trauma or of loose teeth.
