Boy are we on the same page! My Lany was just diagnosed with
insulinoma this a.m. She is also 7 y.o. Her glucose reading was 63
in-house. Doc also sent her blood out to check her liver values,
etc. It's hard to believe, but this is my very first ever
experience with insulinoma. After all the years I've had ferrets
and all the ferrets I've had, this came as quite a surprise. At
3:29 a.m., I thought Lany was dying. I decided just to hold her
until she was gone. About 2 hours later, I started putting it all
together and was convinced it was insulinoma. So, off to the vet we
went first thing.

My Doc said that if her liver values are good, he will recommend
surgery. She is otherwise healthy. If her liver functions are off,
we will stick with pediapred. He did start her on that today. He
said that once symptoms appear, as they did with Lany, there is
usually liver involvement. I don't understand all of this. I'm
just passing on what I was told.

I just changed vets a month or so ago for a number of reasons. What
really makes me mad is that we looked back through her records and
found that she had a low glucose reading in December and it was
never once mentioned to me. This is one more reason I'm glad I
switched vets. I'm pretty angry about that. What I witnessed this
a.m. was not pretty.

Anyway, if your ferret is otherwise healthy, consider the surgery.
