Subject: prolapsed rectum and sugar water
I had a friend call me last night at 3:30 from TX. She lives
way out in the country and the nearest all night clinic was
3.5 hrs away and the regular et opens at 8, so she was trying
to decide what to do. Her younger ferret had a prolapsed
rectum, which she noticed while checking the house after
coyotes tried to get into the chicken pen. The ferret was
fine a 9 (bedtime) but the prolapse was semi-dry to the touch.
I was not sure what to tell her, but I had her soak her
ferret in warm sugar water to try to stop necrosis and to
reduce swelling. Now, this is what I do for all iguanas with
problems , but I was wondering if it was the correct treatment
for ferrets. The prolapse re-entered around 5, and she left
for the vet at 6:30 to be there at opening. She took along a
cooler of warm sugar water and was giving fluids. Just for my
knowledge, was there anything else she should have done?
