Subject: Cancers and illness in our ferrets

Someone had stated that years ago when we were only feeding our guys kitten and cat food that there seemed to not be so many types of illness. So therefore I am wondering why they seem to have that opinion. I agree that ferrets should be taken to a more natural diet, light cycle etc. That processed
food (especially those containg sugar of any kind, yes this includes rice) are actually a lot of the culprit here or is it that just more people are coming out of the woodworks about these illnesses? I am doing all I can to see that my ferrets are given the best chance just like everyone else here. Am I scared of something happening? sure I am. I learn something new everyday..
I keep my ferrets on a more natural light cycle... they have a dark place to sleep... there are no artificial lights on when they are out. If necc a tungsten daylamp bulb is use only if necessary. I feed them natural spring water (not ours YUK)
I am switching to a more natural diet soon and yes I prefer corn over rice for many reasons one of them being the high content of natural sugar in rice. Am I crazy? Probably so. Am I waiting for the "scientific" world to tell me something new? NO... If we waited around on them to "prove" or "do studies" we would not be where we are today with ferret care. Im not knocking scientific study but come on... big companies don't care. I may do my "own studies" so to speak based on information from actual cases in shelters, friends etc but does that mean Im a bad mom or using my kids as guinneas? NO way, it just means me like you wants to find out what actually is going on.. food, light, water, genetics? Hmmm time will tell here..
