I ran into an interesting piece of info today. In spot checks of
supermarkets researchers from a university (Can't recall which one).)
and the USDA found salmonella in something like 20% of the poultry
tested, with no supermarket chain checked being free of the problem.
Now I don't know how susceptible ferrets are to salmonella, but I'd
sure protect any health-compromised, old, or young ones extra well.
A few days ago Steve and I heard a news report in which a reporter
was curious how often use-by dates were altered on perishables and
that was also found in all the chains checked, but i can't recall the
rates. When in doubt cook well and keep cooking surfaces clean, and
return anything that seems "off" rather than risking it.
