Subject: How does topical Prednisone work?

Hi all,

My ferret Linus is currently prescribed prednisone and proglyceem for
his insulinoma. He was recently switched from an oral pred to a
topical one. I am curious to know how the topical works. The vet said
to rub it into his belly. From there, is it absorbed or is it assumed
that he will lick it off? If it is supposed to be absorbed and he
does lick it off, is that a problem? Is there data on the absorption
rate? Is the topical pred considered as good or better than the oral
version? I'm concerned that this may not be as accurate a method as
getting it down him orally, especially if he rubs it off or another
of the ferrets licks it.

He is doing well on the combination of the two medications but isn't
thrilled about receiving them 2x per day. In order to alleviate some
of the stress of administering his medications, the vet suggested the
topical pred. He is on a higher dose of the pred and the topical
proglyceem is very expensive here (Atlanta, GA). But I want to be
sure that he is still getting the same quality of medication.

Thanks for your help!
